2007 UCAP Conference on Protecting Children and Families from Pornography and Other Harmful Material

On October 27, 2007 UCAP hosted its annual conference on Protecting Children and Families Against Pornography and Other Harmful Material. The conference was held at the South Town Expo Center in Sandy, Utah, from 8am to 12 noon. Tickets were $20 and granted access to the opening remarks and keynote speaker, nine break-out sessions presented by therapists, religious leaders, and community advocates, and a question and answer session.

Conference Synopsis

Teaching Healthy Sexuality in the Home
Dan Gray

To counter the unhealthy issues of sexuality created by elements in our society, parents and leaders of youth must convey and model a positive message. This workshop will present ways of creating an open environment in the home where these sensitive issues can be addressed. We will discuss presenting "age appropriate" concepts to our youth and the importance of understanding our teen's sexual challenges and specific tools to help them deal with them.

Healing for Couples Dealing with Addiction to Pornography
Geoff Steurer

Pornography addiction creates devastating consequences for couples.  Come learn about the effects of pornography addiction on a couple relationship and how couples can begin the healing process toward restoring intimacy and trust.  Learn about the stages and tasks couples must pass through to restore their relationship to wholeness.  Common pitfalls in the healing process will be identified and discussed.  Suggestions for working with couples in different helping capacities will be included (i.e., clergy, therapists, friends, and family members).  Time will be allotted for questions and discussion at the end of the presentation.

What Single People Need to Know about Pornography

For better or worse, the Internet has radically changed the modern dating scene. Today, singles are navigating unprecedented opportunities and challenges in finding and building lasting relationships, and Internet pornography is an all too common roadblock in these pursuits. In this workshop, Dr. Manning will provide information and practical suggestions to singles who are impacted by or concerned about pornography's influence in their dating life.

Overcoming a Pornography Problem
Jeff Robinson

Dr. Robinson will describe a simple and straightforward approach which many individuals have used to overcome pornography problems quickly and effectively.  This approach is extremely effective for any one able and willing to implement it exactly and consistently.   Not only does this approach help individuals stop viewing pornography, it almost completely eliminates urges and cravings for pornography.  If you are deeply committed and have strong support, this may be the answer you are looking for.  

Keeping Children Safe on the Internet

The Utah Attorney General's Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force has a mission to protect children from sexual abuse and exploitation by offenders that use the Internet to victimize them. The Utah ICAC Task Force leads the nation in per capita arrests of online predators. The Utah ICAC Task Force is leading the intermountain west in P2P Precision technology to combat child pornography. Where does sexual solicitation of children occur? What sites are they using? How is it being reported? What is the appeal of comuters for victims and preditors? Learn how certain Internet sites and programs like peer-to-peer technology and social networking can put children at a greater risk of victimization.

Suggestions for Ecclesiastical Leaders Encountering Pornography Problems

Ecclesiastical leaders are increasingly encountering pornography problems in their ministries. This workshop will provide ideas and suggestions for clergy who are struggling to know how best to deal with the complex and delicate problems related to pornography use. Ideas pertaining to youth, spouses, pornography users, and clergy themselves will be addressed.
